Bria Phillips notched a hat trick in the second half against Boston U.

BALTIMORE—Boston University scored the first six goals of the game and held on during UMBC’s comeback attempt to defeat the Retrievers, 12-8, Saturday afternoon in America East women’s lacrosse action. UMBC falls to 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference play, while the 17th-ranked Terriers improve to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Boston U. scored held a 6-0 lead after less than 11 minutes of action before UMBC sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) converted a feed from sophomore attack Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) at the 18:44 mark to put the Retrievers on the board for the first time.

The Terriers made it 9-2 with 7:36 to go, but UMBC tallied the final two goals of the period for a 9-4 halftime score.

The Retrievers continued their run to start the second stanza, scoring the first three goals of the half, including a pair by sophomore midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) that pulled the hosts to within two at 9-7 with 11:30 remaining.

But BU stymied the UMBC rally, scoring three of the final four goals of the game for the 12-8 final.

Phillips led the Retrievers with three goals, all in the second half, and earned the home team’s America East Player of the Game nod. Junior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) also scored twice for UMBC.

BU attack Traci Landy was named the Terriers’ Player of the Game after leading all scorers with five goals.

UMBC senior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) made eight saves. She allowed just three goals in the second half. BU keeper Rachel Klein stopped seven shots.

The Terriers outshot the Retrievers, 28-20, and held a 13-9 advantage on draw controls.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, April 18, when they host America East rival Albany on Senior Day.
