Women’s Lacrosse Picked Fifth in America East Preseason Poll

2/4/2010

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The UMBC women’s lacrosse team was predicted to finish fifth in the America East standings, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches, the conference announced Thursday. Five-time defending champion Boston University is the unanimous preseason favorite to win its sixth straight league title.

The Terriers received all six possible first-place votes (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams) and 36 total points to distance themselves from second-place New Hampshire, which received 29 points.

The final first-place vote went to Vermont, which finished third in the poll with 23 points, tied with Albany. Stony Brook (10) and Binghamton (7) round out the seven-team poll.

The top four teams in the conference will advance to the America East Championships May 6-8.

The Retrievers look to return to the America East Tournament for the first time since 2006. UMBC returns nine starters and 16 players overall from a team that finished 9-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play, including first-team all-conference goalkeeper Kate Quick (10.35 GAA, .483 save pct.), second-team midfielder Ashley Stodter (25 goals, 21 draw controls), second-team defender Sarah Willis (32 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers) and all-rookie attack Emily Coady (22 goals, 35 points).

Also returning is junior midfielder Amanda Pappas, the Retrievers’ second-leading scorer with 28 goals and 37 points.

UMBC opens the season on Saturday at Jacksonville. The Retrievers’ first home game is Tuesday, Feb. 23, against local rival Loyola.
