Former Tewaaraton Trophy Winner Amy Appelt Joins Retrievers’ Women’s Lacrosse Staff

8/18/2009

BALTIMORE—Amy Appelt, who won the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy and led the University of Virginia to a national championship in 2004, has been named assistant women’s lacrosse coach at UMBC, head coach Kelly Berger announced today.

“Amy’s enthusiasm and knowledge of the game is intangible,” Berger said. “I’m excited to learn new things from her, as well as teach her some new things. She completes what I believe to be a great staff. I know she can bring a whole new dynamic to the program, and the girls will be eager to learn from someone like that. She will definitely have a big impact.”

Appelt was a four-time All-American at Virginia, where she set school records for career goals (258) and points (373) and ranks second in career assists (115). Her goals and points totals are fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Division I record books, and she set an NCAA record by scoring a goal in 66 straight games. Overall, Appelt scored a goal in 83 of her 85 collegiate games.

A two-time team captain, Appelt became the first Cavalier to win the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation’s best player in 2004, when she led the NCAA in scoring with 90 goals – also a school record – and 121 points, and those totals still rank in the top 10 in Division I history.

Appelt scored a game-high four goals in the Cavaliers’ 10-4 victory over Princeton in the 2004 NCAA title match. Her team also won the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference championship and reached the ACC and NCAA title games in 2003 and 2005.

The native of Garden City, N.Y., has received a number of accolades, including 2002 ACC Rookie of the Year, 2002 Inside Lacrosse National Rookie of the Year, 2004 ACC Player of the Year, 2004 IWLCA Player of the Year, 2004 and 2005 Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com Offensive Player of the Year and the 2004 Honda Award.

Appelt is also a three-time All-ACC selection and earned spots on the 2004 ACC All-Tournament Team and the 2004 and 2005 NCAA All-Tournament Teams, as well as the NCAA’s 25th Anniversary Team in 2006.

In addition, Appelt was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy in 2005, when she amassed 95 points on 57 goals and 38 assists.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to work with Kelly and Tony (Giro, assistant coach) as we build our program and elevate UMBC women’s lacrosse to the next level,” Appelt said.

Appelt spent the 2007 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia, helping to guide her alma mater to the NCAA title game, where the Cavaliers fell to Northwestern, 15-13. She has also coached X-Team, a national-based club squad, and has served as the director of teams and marketing for Bounce Entertainment, aiding high school lacrosse players in the college recruiting process and facilitating the growth of the sport in non-traditional areas such as Georgia, Texas, Kentucky, Washington and Michigan. In addition, she is a featured athlete for STX and Nike Lacrosse, helping promote the women’s product at lacrosse events such as clinics and camps.

Appelt was a part of the U.S. National Team from 2002-09 and was a member of the 2005 World Cup training team. She currently represents the athlete’s council on the U.S. Lacrosse Board of Governor’s.

Appelt graduated from the University of Virginia in May 2005 with her bachelor’s degree in English.
