NASHVILLE, Tenn.—UMBC senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each scored a pair of goals, but 12th-ranked Vanderbilt (1-1) proved too much for the Retrievers (1-1) to handle, as they dropped a 15-6 decision to the Commodores Saturday afternoon.

Leading 2-1 at the 24:28 mark, Vanderbilt scored the final six goals of the first half to lead, 8-1, at the intermission.

But sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) found the back of the net just 43 seconds into the second half, sparking a 5-2 Retriever run that cut the visitors’ deficit to four, 10-6, with 10:44 remaining.

However, the Commodores regained the momentum, rattling off five unanswered goals to end the game.

Vanderbilt midfielder Sarah Downing led all players with seven points on five goals and two assists.

UMBC junior Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) went the distance in goal and recorded 11 saves, while Commodore goalie Natalie Willis stopped nine shots.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when they take on cross-town rival Loyola on the road at 3 p.m.
