Women’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Scotland in Exhibition

BALTIMORE—Senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored five goals and senior attack Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson) tallied four to lead the UMBC women’s lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over the Scottish National Team in an exhibition game Monday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

 

With the score tied, 3-3, midway through the first half, the Retrievers tallied nine straight goals to lead, 12-3, at the intermission. Dorr scored all five of her goals in the first period.

 

Scotland notched the first score of the second half, but back-to-back goals by Swift and freshman midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) in a 22-second span gave UMBC a 14-4 advantage. The teams alternated the next four tallies before junior midfielder Rachel Pincus’ (New Market, Md./Linganore) goal with 1:22 left finished the scoring and gave the Retrievers the 17-6 victory.

 

Sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) recorded five points on two goals and three assists, while Phillips finished with four points on two goals and two assists. Pappas also added a team-best three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

 

Ellie Davey led Scotland with three goals in the game.

 

UMBC junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded two saves, while senior goalie Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) stopped six shots. Scotland keeper Jemima Garthwaite finished with eight saves.

 

The Retrievers out-shot Scotland, 27-14 in the game and held a 14-8 advantage on draw controls. The teams were even with nine ground balls apiece.

 

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they take on 11th-ranked Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn. UMBC is 1-0 on the season after a 19-1 rout of Howard on Saturday, Feb. 14.
