2/14/2009

  • Box Score

Kara Dorr scored a career-high four goals and five points against Howard.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Four Retrievers notched hat tricks to lead the UMBC women’s lacrosse team (1-0) to a convincing 19-1 victory over Howard (0-1) Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

The Retrievers scored the first 16 goals of the game and led 12-0 at halftime. Senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) got the scoring started with a free-position goal just 1:19 into the game and had three in the first half.

Howard finally got on the board with 14:03 left in the game when attack Sakita Holley found the back of the net.

But the Retrievers responded with three more goals in the final six minutes of action to complete the victory.

In all, eight Retrievers scored a goal and 13 recorded at least one point.

Dorr finished with a game-high four goals and five points, both career highs. Senior attack Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson), sophomore midfielder Meagan Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and freshman midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) each notched hat tricks, as well, while freshman attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied a game-high four assists.

Other players with multiple points included junior midfielder Amanda Gable (2g, 1a), sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (2g), sophomore attack Erika Braerman (1g, 1a), sophomore midfielder Ashley Stodter (1g, 1a) and sophomore midfielder Carrie Parris (2a).

Junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded two saves in the game, while senior Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) stopped one shot.

The Retrievers held a 13-5 advantage on ground balls and a 16-6 edge on draw controls. UMBC also out-shot the Bison, 35-2.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on 12th-ranked Vanderbilt.
