WOMEN'S LACROSSE TO PLAY SACRED HEART IN FIRST ROUND OF NEC TOURNAMENT; GERHART NAMED NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

After clinching the number one seed for this weekend's upcoming Northeast Conference tournament thanks to their win over Wagner, the UMBC women's lacrosse team has learned that it will play fourth-seeded Sacred Heart on Friday in the semi-finals.The Retrievers, who have beaten the Pioneers 9-5 already this season, will play at 1 pm. Following their game, second-seeded Monmouth takes on third-seeded Wagner at 3 pm. The winners of both games will meet to decide the championship at noon on Sunday with that victor advancing to the NCAA tournament.All three games will be held at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers have also beaten both Monmouth (14-13) and Wagner (16-8) so far this season.On another note, senior midfielder Jamie Gerhart was named NEC Player of the Week, making her the third straight Retriever to earn the award. Her stellar play helped lead the Retrievers to three wins last week, including a pair of key league victories that propelled UMBC to their fourth regular season championship in five years. Gerhart scored a hat trick versus Towson, then she scored a goal and an assist against Monmouth and she finished her week by tying a career-high in points with seven (5g, 2a) against Wagner. Currently, she leads the Retrievers in scoring with 32 goals and 17 assists. In Sunday's game against Wagner, she moved into fifth place on UMBC's all-time scoring list.
