4/17/2002

Lauren Traber gets the game-winner with a second to play vs. Towson.

Junior midfielder Lauren Traber scored with one second left as UMBC (8-4) won its seventh straight game, a 12-11 triumph over Towson (6-8) at UMBC Stadium. The game featured five ties and four lead changes and neither team enjoyed more than a one-goal lead in the final 34 minutes of play. Towson took its final at 11-10 as Martha Dwyer converted a pass from Kristyn Krastel with 4:16 remaining. UMBC would get the game-tying goal as defender Beth Milani scored on a left-handed drive with 1:01 to play. Towson, which won 19 of 24 draws, lost the game's final draw, and UMBC's Ashley Staines fired wide on a free position attempt with eight seconds to play. But on the restart, Traber took the ball to the front of the goal and scored on a backhanded shot with one second to play. UMBC senior midfielder Jamie Gerhart led all scorers with three goals, and senior attacker Shannon Gallup added two goals and an assist. Retrievers Stephanie Allen and Jen Dragoni added two goals each. Towson was led by Kristyn Krastel and Abigail Giancola who had each had two goals and an assist.
