WOMEN'S LACROSSE WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT, 15-13, OVER MOUNT ST. MARY'S

Emmittsburg, MD-- Despite a furious second half comeback by the Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team, Md. - Baltimore County was able to hold for the 15-13 victory. The loss is the Mount's fourth consecutive defeat and with the win, UMBC improves to 7-4, 5-0 in the Northeast Conference. The Mount (6-8, 2-3) outscored UMBC 5-2 over the final 15 minutes of the match but it did not undo their slow start to the second half. Jen Dragoni led all scorers with four goals and Erin Gargan (Millersville, Md. / Mount de Sales Academy) and Nicole DiAngelo (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) each had a hat trick for the Mount. The first half was tightly contested with five lead changes and six ties. Addie Lewis (Chester, Md. / St. Mary's) got the Mount on the board first with 25:39 remaining in the opening half. Dragoni tied it less than three minutes later for UMBC but Moran got the Mount back up 2-1 with 21:12 to go in the half. UMBC would dominate over the next eight minutes outscoring the Mount 3-0 to go up 4-2. To continue the trend of runs in the game, the Mount would score three unanswered goals, two by Gargan, to reclaim the lead at 5-4 with 9:54 left in the half. Lauren Traber scored twice in less that two minutes for UMBC to put them back in front, but with 5:05 remaining, Lewis assisted DiAngelo to knot the score at six. Dragoni and Lara Steinbraker (Rockville, Md. / Good Counsel) each tallied once each for their respective teams to head to the break locked at 7-7. The first 15 minutes of the second stanza belonged to UMBC. Shannon Gallup and Loree Miller each scored twice to lead them to a 12-7 advantage with 16:53 left in the contest. The Mount, behind solid offensive and defensive play, would rally the rest of the way exchanging two of their goals for just one by UMBC. Goals by Gargan and Michelle Coates (Winston-Salem, N.C. / Albemarle [N.C.]) started the trend as Stephanie Allen scored for UMBC to make it a 13-9 lead. Steinbraker and Moran got the Mount within 13-11 but Dragoni tallied her final goal of the afternoon to push their lead back to three. The Mount would continue to battle and got to within just one goal with 0:28 remaining on scores by DiAngelo and Keene but the visitors would ice the game when Gallup made it 15-13 with just 20 seconds to play. Allen and Gallup each had three goals for UMBC and Steinbraker and Kelly Moran (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) each contributed two tallies for the Mount. Miller led all players with two assists for UMBC while Lewis and DiAngelo each had one helper for the Mount. The Mount picked up 31 ground balls to 25 for UMBC. Kelly Nangle (Glen Burnie, Md. / Glen Burnie) led all players with seven ground balls. UMBC held a 29-22 advantage in shots taken but the Mount forced 20 turnovers to 14 for the visitors.
