WOMEN'S LACROSSE COMES UP SHORT AT VIRGINIA, 14-8

Charlottesville, VA—After allowing Virginia to score the first four goals of the game, the UMBC women’s lacrosse team played virtually even with the Cavaliers for the rest of the contest, eventually succumbing, 14-8, on a misty day in Charlottesville.The Retrievers (1-4) would fall behind early as UVA (7-2) scored a quartet of goals in the first seven minutes. UMBC would trim that lead in half, however, as junior midfielder Lauren Traber notched two consecutive scores, making it 4-2 with 20:18 remaining in the first half. At halftime, the Retrievers trailed 8-4 following Traber’s third goal and sophomore attacker Jen Dragoni’s first. UMBC would continue their run into the second half, scoring the first two goals and reducing the Virginia advantage to 8-6 with 26:28 to go. That was as close as the Retrievers would get the rest of the way as the Cavaliers ran off four straight goals to regain a comfortable 12-6 lead.On the day, Traber led UMBC with three goals with Dragoni adding two and freshman attacker Anna Jacobs chipping in two assists. In goal, junior Courtney Stringer made 11 saves as the Cavaliers outshot the Retrievers, 37-16.Scoring: UVA: Aumiller (6-2-8), Cangemi (1-3-4), Appelt (2-2-4), Banks (2-1-3), Sambus (0-2-2), Keller (1-0-1), Chasney (1-0-1), Thalenburg (1-0-1), Young (0-1-1).
