UMBC’S KELLY FIORANI SELECTED TO IWLCA ALL-REGIONAL SECOND TEAM

5/25/2006

Kelly Fiorani adds second team all-region to her many honors this season.

Baltimore, Md.-UMBC senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) was selected to the 2006 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Regional Second Team, the organization announced Wednesday. Fiorani is one of 128 Division-I student-athletes from across the country who are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced May 30.

One of the best lacrosse players in UMBC history, Fiorani’s senior season was her best, as she finished second on the team with 39 goals and 53 points and third with 14 assists. She also led the team with 45 ground balls, 39 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers en route to 2006 America East All-Conference First Team and All-Championship Team honors and the UMBC Outstanding Senior Athlete award.

Fiorani ends her career ranked third all-time in goals (140) and points (189) and seventh in assists (49), and she is UMBC second all-time leading scorer at the Division-I level.

In 2006, the Retrievers completed their most successful season in four years with a 10-8 overall record and a 5-1 mark in America East Conference play, earning the top seed in the league championships, where they fell in the first round to fourth-seeded New Hampshire.
