WOMEN’S LACROSSE RIDES FOUR-GAME WINNING STREAK TO NEW HAMPSHIRE FOR AMERICA EAST SHOWDOWN

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC women’s lacrosse team travels to Durham, N.H., this weekend, to take on America East rival New Hampshire Saturday at 12 p.m. The teams are currently tied atop the conference standings with identical 2-0 records in league play. The Retrievers are 7-4 overall and riding a four-game winning streak, while the Wildcats are just as hot at 6-4 on the season with a five-game win streak.

 

A Look Ahead

Saturday, April 8 – UMBC at New Hampshire, 12 p.m., Memorial Field: Katie Leland leads the Wildcats with 30 goals, 18 assists and 48 points, and she is New Hampshire’s all-time scoring leader with 236 career points. She is also the reigning America East Co-Player of the Week after scoring 15 points on nine goals and six assists in two games last week. Sarah Von Bargen is the reigning America East Rookie of the Week with six goals in two games. The Wildcats have won five in a row with decisive conference wins over Albany and Vermont.

 

New Hampshire was picked to finish second in the America East behind defending conference champion and unanimous preseason favorite Boston University. Last season, the Wildcats lost to the Terriers in the America East championship, and their only regular season loss was to Boston U.

 

The Retrievers have never beaten the Wildcats in three tries. UMBC’s Jocena Venditti scored a team-high five goals and seven points in last season’s 21-13 loss, while Leland tallied nine times and added two assists for UNH.

 

Looking Back

Tuesday, April 4 – UMBC 13, American 8: Senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and freshman midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scored three goals as the Retrievers won their fourth straight game with a 13-8 victory over American. UMBC outscored American, 5-2, over the final 16:36 of regulation, and junior attack Heather Licht (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored the eventual game-winner at the 28:00 mark. Fiorani scored a game-high four points on three goals and an assist. Dorr (3g), sophomore attack Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll) (2g, 1a) and junior midfielder Kelly Fahey (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) (1g, 2a) each posted three points in the game, while sophomore attack Meghan Keelan (Randallstown, Md./Mount de Sales) notched two points on a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes for UMBC.

 

Dawg Bites…

Fiorani leads the Retrievers with 26 goals, 36 points and 17 caused turnovers, and she is tied for second with 10 assists. She now has 127 career goals, which surpasses former teammate Jen Dragoni and ties Debbie Krastel for fifth on UMBC's all-time list. Her 172 career points and 45 career assists rank seventh in school history… Fiorani has scored at least one goal in all 11 games this season, including at least three in five different games, with a career-high five goals against Virginia Tech...  Dorr has scored seven goals in her last two games, while Levendusky has tallied six times in that time… Keelan leads the Retrievers with 14 assists, while Dorr is tops on the team with 36 ground balls and 31 draw controls… UMBC is 1-2 against ranked opponents this season after defeating No. 11 Boston University and losing to No. 14 Loyola and No. 11 William and Mary… The Retrievers’ victory over the Terriers on April 1 was their first-ever over the defending America East champions in six tries.

 

Trio of Retrievers Honored

Levendusky was named America East Co-Player of the Week and Sweeney was tabbed America East Defender of the Week for the week ending April 2. In addition, Dorr earned Rookie of the Week honors from womenslacrosse.com.

 

Levendusky scored four goals and added an assist in the Retrievers’ 16-13 upset victory over 11th-ranked Boston University. Her final three goals came in the second half, including two of the Retrievers’ final four tallies as they pulled away for their first-ever win over the defending America East champions. Levendusky is third on the team with 19 goals and fourth with 24 points this season.

 

Sweeney recorded 13 saves, including nine in the first half, to help fend off the Terriers. She has registered 90 saves on the season.

 

Dorr was instrumental in UMBC's upset of Boston U., scoring four goals, scooping up seven groundballs and adding three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Two of those goals came in a 5-1 run when the game was tied at 10-10.
