WOMEN’S LACROSSE WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT WITH 13-8 VICTORY OVER AMERICAN

    Kelly Fiorani scored four points on three goals and an assist against American.

    Washington, D.C.-Senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) freshman midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scored three goals as the UMBC women’s lacrosse team (7-4) won its fourth straight game with a 13-8 victory over American (5-7).

     

    Sophomore attack Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll) got the Retrievers on the board early with an unassisted goal just 1:22 into the game. Chelsea Kapp tied it up just over a minute later, and the teams traded two more goals apiece for a 3-3 score midway through the first half.

     

    With 7:33 to play, Levendusky tallied again and Dorr scored her first of the game for a 5-3 UMBC lead. Caithlin Gorman’s goal with 11 seconds left pulled the Eagles to within one at 5-4 at the intermission.

     

    Dorr scored the first goal of the second half just under five minutes into the period, but Lauren Lane and Moriah Linnell each scored for American to tie the game at 6-6 with 22:24 to play in the game.

     

    But the Retrievers answered back with two of their own on a free-position goal by Fiorani and an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Ede Carpenter (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville/Catonsville CC) to take the lead for good with 18:29 remaining.

     

    UMBC outscored American, 5-2, over the final 16:36 of regulation for the 13-8 victory. Junior attack Heather Licht (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored the eventual game-winner at the 28:00 mark, and junior midfielder Jen Kasper (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) closed out the scoring with 1:42 remaining.

     

    Fiorani scored a game-high four points on three goals and an assist. Dorr (3g), Levendusky (2g, 1a) and junior midfielder Kelly Fahey (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) (1g, 2a) each posted three points in the game, while sophomore attack Meghan Keelan (Randallstown, Md./Mount de Sales) notched two points on a goal and an assist.

     

    Linnell led the Eagles with three points on two goals and a helper. Kapp and Gorman also scored twice for American.

     

    UMBC freshman goalie Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes. Kathleen Finnegan and Kristine Vida split time in the net for American, as Finnegan registered five saves and allowed 10 goals in 50:44, while Vida played 9:16 and allowed three goals while stopping no shots.

     

    The Eagles out-shot the Retrievers, 25-20, and held a 27-22 advantage on ground balls. UMBC won the draw control battle, 13-10. Levendusky led the Retrievers with five ground balls in the game, while Dorr won five draws.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, April 8, as they head to Durham, N.H., to take on New Hampshire at 12 p.m.
