WOMEN’S LACROSSE HOSTS NO. 11 WILLIAM AND MARY SATURDAY

Baltimore, Md.-After two games on the road last week, the UMBC women’s lacrosse team returns home this weekend to host 11th-ranked William & Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers are 3-3 on the season after falling to Old Dominion, 11-7, last Saturday.

 

A Look Ahead

Saturday, March 18 – William & Mary at UMBC, 4 p.m., UMBC Stadium: The Tribe are 3-2 on the season after falling to ninth-ranked Georgetown, 13-3, on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. William and Mary has take on four straight top 15 opponents heading into Saturday’s game at UMBC and is 2-2 in that stretch. The Tribe defeated then-No. 9 Boston University at home before falling to No. 14 Richmond in Richmond then beating No. 7 Penn State in State College, Pa. Two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Colleen Dalon leads the Tribe with 17 goals and 18 points, while La Nolan is tops with six assists.

 

Last Time vs. William & Mary

The Retrievers and Tribe faced off last season, with William and Mary winning, 19-9, in Williamsburg, Va., on March 19, 2005. The Tribe had an 8-2 lead at halftime, but UMBC scored five of the first six goals of the second half to pull within two at 9-7 before William and Mary pulled away with eight straight goals. Senior Anna Jacobs led the Retrievers with three goals. Morgan Watkins tallied a game-high seven times for the Tribe, while Dalon posted a game-high nine points on three goals and six assists. The Retrievers have never beaten the Tribe in 11 tries.

 

Looking Back

Saturday, March 11 – Old Dominion 11, UMBC 7: Senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) notched her fourth hat trick of the season, but the Retrievers fell to Old Dominion, 11-7, in the Lady Monarchs’ home opener at Foreman Field. Old Dominion took a 3-2 lead into halftime and scored two quick goals to open the second half before UMBC tallied two of its own. ODU took a 7-4 lead, but the Retrievers tallied three in a row to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:20 to go in the game. But the Lady Monarchs quickly untied it with two goals scored 25 seconds apart for the eventual game-winner. Fiorani scored a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Sophomore attack Meghan Keelan (Randallstown, Md./Mount de Sales) added an assist to give her two points. Jacobs added two assists to her three goals for a game-high five points for ODU.

 

Fiorani Climbs Charts

Fiorani has scored 18 goals on the season to give her 119 in her career, which ranks eighth all-time in UMBC history, just one behind Jamie Gerhart. With 24 points on the season, Fiorani is seventh all-time with 160 points. Fiorani also has 41 career assists, making her ninth in UMBC history, just one behind Shawne Heckler for eighth place all-time. She leads the team in both goals and points and is third in assists.

Offensive Season Opener

Keelan and junior attack Jen Kasper (Eldersburg, Md./South Carroll) each scored four goals in the Retrievers’ 23-11 victory over Howard in the season opener. The last time the Retrievers had two players score four or more goals in the same game was April 3, 2004, when Fiorani and Lauren Hess each tallied five in the 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook. The 23 goals UMBC scored against the Bison are the most since that same win over the Seawolves. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points against the Bison.

 

Triple Your Pleasure

Keelan scored four goals and five points in 10 games in 2005, but she posted four goals and eight points in her first contest of the 2006 campaign. She has seven goals and 16 points on the season, and she leads the team with nine assists.

 

Retriever Firsts

Freshmen Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Ashley Lancer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) wasted no time in scoring their first collegiate goals, as they all tallied against Howard. Junior Lynnea Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake/Anne Arundel CC/St. Mary’s), a junior college transfer, also tallied in her UMBC debut, while senior Ede Carpenter (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville/CCBC-Catonsville) posted the first two goals of her career in the game.

 

Retrievers in the America East

Several Retrievers rank in the top 10 in the America East Conference in various categories. Fiorani leads the league with 18 goals and 24 points, ranks second with four points per game and third with three goals per game. She is also second with 39 shots and tied for fifth with 6.5 shots per game. Keelan is tied for first in the conference with nine assists and tied for fourth with 1.50 apg. Dorr ranks second with 17 draw controls and 2.83 per game, while Carpenter is fifth with 15 draws and 2.5 per game. Carpenter also ranks second in the league with 11 caused turnovers and fifth with 1.83 per game. Freshman goalie Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) leads the conference with 50 saves.

 

As a team, the Retrievers lead the conference with 75 goals scored and 108 points. They are tied for second with 12.5 goals per game and 18 ppg. They are also second with 33 assists and third with 5.5 apg. UMBC is tops with 194 ground balls and second with 32.33 per game. The Retrievers rank first in the league with 81 draw controls and 13.5 per game. UMBC leads the conference with 177 shots and is fourth with 29.5 shots per game and second with a .424 shot percentage. The Retrievers are also tops with 89 caused turnovers and 14.83 per game. Their 61 saves lead the conference and their 10.17 saves per game rank third.

 

Dawg Bites…

Dorr scored a career-high four goals, including the game-winner, in the Retrievers’ 12-9 victory over Delaware… Fiorani and sophomore attack Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll) have each scored at least one goal in all six games this season. Fiorani has tallied at least three times in four different games, with a career-high five goals against Virginia Tech, while Levendusky has four multi-goal games… Sweeney and fellow freshman goalie Jen Venter (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) have combined to play all 360 minutes in the net this season. The last time two freshmen played the majority of the time in goal for the Retrievers was 2004, when Kristina Raab (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) and Jena Goldstein played all 959 minutes at the position. Sweeney has seen the majority of the minutes in 2006, playing nearly 80 percent of the time, and she has posted a 9.14 goals-against average with a .538 save percentage.

 

Season Recap

Saturday, Feb. 18 – UMBC 23, Howard 11: Keelan scored a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead an offensive barrage as the Retrievers defeated Howard, 23-11, in the season opener for both squads. The game marked the debut of Courtney Connor as UMBC’s head coach. Kasper made a triumphant return in her first game back after a knee injury that kept her out for the final 12 games of last season, as she scored seven points on three goals and four assists, setting new career highs in both points and helpers and tying her best in scores. Junior midfielder Kelly Fahey (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) tied a career high with four goals and five points, while Levendusky picked up where she left off at the end of last season, scoring a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points, including three newcomers playing in their first game at UMBC. The 23 goals are the most the Retrievers have scored since a 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook on April 3, 2004.

 

Friday, Feb. 24 – Virginia Tech 18, UMBC 12: Fiorani tied a career high with five goals, but the Retrievers suffered their first loss of the season, 18-12, to Virginia Tech. Fiorani added two assists for seven points, while Fahey  and Levendusky each scored twice. Keelan added a goal and an assist for two points.

 

Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Loyola 8, UMBC 6: Just a year after falling to Loyola by a score of 20-8, the Retrievers dropped a heartbreaker to the 14th-ranked Greyhounds. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half before Carpenter and Dorr each scored to bring the Retrievers within two at 4-2. The Retrievers came out shooting in the second half and went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-5 with 11:49 remaining on goals by Levendusky, Fiorani and Spinnenweber, but Loyola scored the final three goals of the contest. Sweeney was strong in the net, stopping 12 shots. Carpenter finished with a team-best two goals and two points. All six of the Retrievers’ goals were unassisted, the first time UMBC did not record a helper in a contest since the 16-7 loss to Old Dominion on March 12, 2005.

 

Saturday, March 4 – UMBC 15, Manhattan 4: Four Retrievers notched hat tricks as the Retrievers dominated Manhattan, 15-4. Fiorani scored four goals, while Fahey, Kasper and Levendusky each posted three. Kasper added two assists and Fiorani one for a game-high five points apiece. Levendusky also had an assist to give her four points on the night. UMBC had a 9-3 lead at halftime and scored the first six goals of the second half. Sweeney played the majority of the game in the net for the Retrievers, allowing three goals while stopping 10 shots. The Retrievers out-shot the Jaspers, 45-22, including 22-4 in the second half. UMBC also held a 50-26 ground ball advantage and won 18 draw controls to Manhattan’s three.

 

Tuesday, March 7- UMBC 12, Delaware 9: Dorr scored a career-high four goals and Fiorani added five points to lead the Retrievers past the host Blue Hens. Down 6-2 with 9:15 remaining in the first half, the Retrievers rallied to score the final four goals of the period and head into halftime with the score tied, 6-6. Dorr’s goal with 7:43 remaining gave the Retrievers the lead for good at 10-9, and they added two insurance goals before the final buzzer sounded. Dorr led the Retrievers with four goals on the night, while Fiorani posted a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Keelan had a goal and two assists for three points, while Levendusky and Kasper each tallied twice on the night. Sweeney recorded 16 saves on the night. Sophomore defender Maggie Chizmar (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) had a good night defensively for the Retrievers, picking up four ground balls and causing five Delaware turnovers to lead UMBC in both categories.
