UMBC WOMEN’S LACROSSE HEADS TO DELAWARE TUESDAY EVENING

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC women’s lacrosse team travels to Newark, Del. Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with the Delaware Blue Hens at Rullo Stadium. The Retrievers are 2-2 on the season and coming off a 15-4 victory over Manhattan on Saturday.

 

A Look Ahead

Tuesday, March 7 – UMBC at Delaware, 7:30 p.m., Rullo Stadium: The Blue Hens are 1-2 on the season and coming off a 9-8 loss to Rutgers on Saturday. Their one win was a 12-11 overtime victory over Denver. The Blue Hens also lost its season opener, 16-10, to Loyola, a team which defeated UMBC, 8-6, last week. Casey McCrudden leads Delaware with nine goals and 10 points. The Blue Hens received votes in the IWLCA preseason poll. Delaware returns 12 letterwinners, including six starters, and adds 17 newcomers to a team that finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 4-3 conference record and 8-8 overall mark but lost to top-seeded Hofstra in the first round of the CAA playoffs. The Blue Hens were also ranked in the national top 20 nine times in 2005 and defeated three top-20 opponents during the season. McCrudden was a CAA all-rookie team member last year with 26 points and a team-high 32 goals. Delaware was picked to finish fourth in the conference in the 2006 preseason coaches poll.

 

Looking Back

Saturday, March 4 – UMBC 15, Manhattan 4: Four Retrievers notched hat tricks as the UMBC women’s lacrosse team dominated Manhattan, 15-4. Senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani scored four goals, while junior midfielder Kelly Fahey, junior attack Jen Kasper and sophomore attack Ali Levendusky each posted three. Kasper added two assists and Fiorani one for a game-high five points apiece. Levendusky also had an assist to give her four points on the night. UMBC had a 9-3 lead at halftime and scored the first six goals of the second half. Freshman goalie Susie Sweeney played the majority of the game in the net for the Retrievers, allowing three goals while stopping 10 shots. Freshman Jen Venter relieved Sweeney with 13:32 to play in the game and allowed the final Jasper goal while registering one save. The Retrievers out-shot the Jaspers, 45-22, including 22-4 in the second half. UMBC also held a 50-26 ground ball advantage and won 18 draw controls to Manhattan’s three.

 

Fiorani Climbs Charts

Fiorani has scored 12 goals on the season to give her 113 in her career, moving her past Robi Tamargo and Dolly Ginter into 10th place all-time at UMBC. With 15 points on the season, Fiorani is ninth all-time with 151 points, just two behind Jenny Held. Fiorani also has 38 career assists, tying her with Kori Kindbom for 10th place in UMBC history in that category, as well.

Double Your Pleasure

Sophomore attack Meghan Keelan has already surpassed her goal total and doubled her point total from a year ago. She scored four goals and five points in 10 games in 2005, but she posted four goals and eight points in the first contest of the 2006 campaign. She has five goals and 11 points on the season.

 

Offensive Season Opener

Keelan and Kasper each scored four goals in the Retrievers’ 23-11 victory Howard in the season opener. The last time the Retrievers had two players score four or more goals in the same game was April 3, 2004, when Fiorani and Lauren Hess each tallied five in the 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook. The 23 goals UMBC scored against the Bison are the most since that same win over the Seawolves. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points against the Bison.

 

Retriever Firsts

Freshmen Kara Dorr, Abbey Swift and Ashley Lancer wasted no time in scoring their first collegiate goals, as they all tallied against Howard. Junior Lynnea Spinnenweber, a junior college transfer, also tallied in her UMBC debut, while senior Ede Carpenter posted the first two goals of her career in the game.

 

Dawg Bites…

Fiorani leads the Retrievers with 12 goals on the short season, followed by Levendusky nine. Fiorani ranks first with 15 points, followed by Levendusky and Kasper with 13 each. Kasper has seven assists to lead the team, followed by Keelan with six… Sweeney and Venter have combined to play all 240 minutes in the net this season. The last time two freshmen played the majority of the time in goal for the Retrievers was 2004, when Kristina Raab and Jena Goldstein played all 959 minutes at the position.

 

Season Recap

Saturday, Feb. 18 – UMBC 23, Howard 11: Keelan scored a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead an offensive barrage as the Retrievers defeated Howard, 23-11, in the season opener for both squads. The game marked the debut of Courtney Connor as UMBC’s head coach. Kasper made a triumphant return in her first game back after a knee injury that kept her out for the final 12 games of last season, as she scored seven points on three goals and four assists, setting new career highs in both points and helpers and tying her best in scores. Fahey tied a career high with four goals and five points, while Levendusky picked up where she left off at the end of last season, scoring a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points, including three newcomers playing in their first game at UMBC. The 23 goals are the most the Retrievers have scored since a 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook on April 3, 2004.

 

Friday, Feb. 24 – Virginia Tech 18, UMBC 12: Fiorani tied a career high with five goals, but the Retrievers suffered their first loss of the season, 18-12, to Virginia Tech. Fiorani added two assists for seven points, while Fahey  and Levendusky each scored twice. Keelan added a goal and an assist for two points.

 

Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Loyola 8, UMBC 6: Just a year after falling to Loyola by a score of 20-8, the Retrievers dropped a heartbreaker to the 14th-ranked Greyhounds. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half before Carpenter Dorr each scored to bring the Retrievers within two at 4-2. The Retrievers came out shooting in the second half and went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-5 with 11:49 remaining on goals by Levendusky, Fiorani and Spinnenweber, but Loyola scored the final three goals of the contest. Sweeney was strong in the net, stopping 12 shots. Carpenter finished with a team-best two goals and two points. All six of the Retrievers’ goals were unassisted, the first time UMBC did not record a helper in a contest since the 16-7 loss to Old Dominion on March 12, 2005.
