3/3/2006

Ali Levendusky has scored nine points (6g, 3a) in three games for the Retrievers.

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC women’s lacrosse team will host Manhattan Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers are 1-2 on the season and coming off a heartbreaking 8-6 loss to local rival and 14th-ranked Loyola on Tuesday.

A Look Ahead

Saturday, March 4 – Manhattan at UMBC, 7 p.m., UMBC Stadium: The Jaspers are 0-1 on the season and coming off a season-opening 15-2 loss at Drexel on Tuesday. The Dragons scored the first 10 goals of the game before Brenna Tinari ended the shutout with 3:25 to go in the first half. Tinari also recorded an assist on Manhattan’s only other goal of the game. Goalie Ashley Devins recorded seven saves. The Jaspers were picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll, and senior midfielder Molly Pheterson was named to the preseason all-MAAC team. Last season, Pheterson was a first-team all-MAAC selection with a team-best 37 goals and 42 points. Manhattan is the two-time defending MAAC champion. Saturday’s game is the first meeting between the Retrievers and the Jaspers.

Looking Back

Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Loyola 8, UMBC 6: Just a year after falling to Loyola by a score of 20-8, the Retrievers dropped a heartbreaker to the 14th-ranked Greyhounds. It was UMBC’s second straight loss, while the victory was Loyola’s second in a row. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half before senior midfielder Ede Carpenter (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville/CCBC-Catonsville) and freshman midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scored to bring the Retrievers within two at 4-2. The Retrievers came out shooting in the second half and went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-5 with 11:49 remaining on goals by sophomore attack Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll), senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and junior midfielder Lynnea Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake, Anne Arundel CC/St. Mary’s), but Loyola scored the final three goals of the contest. UMBC freshman goalie Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) was strong in the net, stopping 12 shots. Carpenter finished with a team-best two goals and two points. All six of the Retrievers’ goals were unassisted, the first time UMBC did not record a helper in a contest since the 16-7 loss to Old Dominion on March 12, 2005.

Double Your Pleasure

Sophomore attack Meghan Keelan (Randallstown, Md./Mount de Sales) has already surpassed her goal total and doubled her point total from a year ago. She scored four goals and five points in 10 games in 2005, but she posted four goals and eight points in the first contest of the 2006 campaign, then added a goal and two points against Virginia Tech, giving her five goals and 10 points on the season.

Offensive Season Opener

Keelan and junior attack Jen Kasper (Eldersburg, Md./South Carroll) each scored four goals in the Retrievers’ 23-11 victory Howard in the season opener. The last time the Retrievers had two players score four or more goals in the same game was April 3, 2004, when Fiorani and Lauren Hess each tallied five in the 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook. The 23 goals UMBC scored against the Bison are the most since that same win over the Seawolves. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points against the Bison.

Retriever Firsts

Freshmen Dorr, Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Ashley Lancer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) wasted no time in scoring their first collegiate goals, as they all tallied against Howard. Spinnenweber, a junior college transfer, also tallied in her UMBC debut, while Carpenter posted the first two goals of her career in the game.

Dawg Bites…

Fiorani leads the Retrievers with eight goals on the short season, followed by Levendusky and junior midfielder Kelly Fahey (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) with six apiece. Fiorani and Keelan rank first with 10 points each, followed by Levendusky with nine. Keelan and Kasper each have five assists to lead the team… Sweeney and fellow freshman goalie Jen Venter (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) have combined to play all 180 minutes in the net this season. The last time two freshmen played the majority of the time in goal for the Retrievers was 2004, when Kristina Raab and Jena Goldstein played all 959 minutes at the position.

Season Recap

Saturday, Feb. 18 – UMBC 23, Howard 11: Keelan scored a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead an offensive barrage as the Retrievers defeated Howard, 23-11, in the season opener for both squads. The game marked the debut of Courtney Connor as UMBC’s head coach. Kasper made a triumphant return in her first game back after a knee injury that kept her out for the final 12 games of last season, as she scored seven points on three goals and four assists, setting new career highs in both points and helpers and tying her best in scores. Fahey tied a career high with four goals and five points, while Levendusky picked up where she left off at the end of last season, scoring a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points, including three newcomers playing in their first game at UMBC. The 23 goals are the most the Retrievers have scored since a 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook on April 3, 2004.

Friday, Feb. 24 – Virginia Tech 18, UMBC 12: Fiorani tied a career high with five goals, but the Retrievers suffered their first loss of the season, 18-12, to Virginia Tech.
