UMBC WOMEN’S LACROSSE DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO NO. 14 LOYOLA, 8-6

    Ede Carpenter notched two goals for the Retrievers.

    Baltimore, Md.-Just a year after falling to Loyola by a score of 20-8, the UMBC women’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to the 14th-ranked Greyhounds, 8-6, Tuesday evening at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers fall to 1-2 on the season while Loyola improves to 2-0.

     

    The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half before senior Ede Carpenter and freshman Kara Dorr each scored to bring the Retrievers within two at 4-2. Loyola’s All-American Kate McHarg notched her second goal of the game, but Carpenter added another for UMBC with 14 seconds remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

     

    The Retrievers came out shooting in the second half and went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-5 with 11:49 remaining on goals by sophomore Ali Levendusky, senior Kelly Fiorani and junior Lynnea Spinnenweber.

     

    But Loyola scored the final three goals of the contest, including McHarg’s third of the game, and won by a score of 8-6.

     

    UMBC freshman goalie Susie Sweeney was strong in the net, stopping 12 shots, while Loyola’s Cindy Nicolaus recorded six saves.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, March 4, when they host Manhattan at 7 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
