A Look Ahead

Friday, Feb. 24 – UMBC at Virginia Tech, 3 p.m., Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium: Virginia Tech opens its season against the Retrievers on Friday. The Hokies return 11 of 12 starters from last season’s squad, which went 5-10 overall and 0-4 in their inaugural campaign in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Retrievers have never beaten the Hokies in three tries, most recently falling, 16-7, in 1999.

Looking Back

Saturday, Feb. 18 – UMBC 23, Howard 11: Sophomore attack Meghan Keelan (Randallstown, Md./Mount de Sales) scored a career high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead an offensive barrage as the UMBC women’s lacrosse team defeated Howard, 23-11 in the season opener for both squads. The game marked the debut of Courtney Connor as UMBC’s head coach. Junior attack Jen Kasper (Eldersburg, Md./South Carroll) made a triumphant return in her first game back after a knee injury that kept her out for the final 12 games of last season, as she scored seven points on three goals and four assists, setting new career highs in both points and helpers and tying her best in scores. Junior midfielder Kelly Fahey (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) tied a career high with four goals and five points, while sophomore attack Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll) picked up where she left off at the end of last season, scoring a career-high six points on three goals and three assists.

After Howard scored the opening goal just 12 seconds into the contest, UMBC went on an 8-0 run in a span of 15 minutes to take control of the game. The Retrievers had a 13-8 halftime lead and scored the first four goals of the second frame. Nine Retrievers tallied multiple points, including three newcomers playing in their first game at UMBC. The 23 goals are the most the Retrievers have scored since a 24-10 win over America East rival Stony Brook on April 3, 2004.

Fiorani Climbs Charts

Senior midfielder Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) scored two goals against Howard to give her 103 in her career, leaving her just eight shy of tying Robi Tamargo and Dolly Ginter for 10th all-time at UMBC. The two points against the Bison gives her 138 in three-plus seasons, leaving her just five behind Debbie Kratsel for 10th all-time.

Dawg Bites…

Keelan has already surpassed her point total and tied her goal total from a year ago. She scored four goals and five points in 10 games in 2005, but she posted four goals and eight points in the first contest of the 2006 campaign… Senior Ede Carpenter (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville/CCBC-Catonsville) posted the first two goals of her career in Saturday’s win over Howard… The last time the Retrievers had two players score four or more goals in the same game was April 3, 2004, when Fiorani and Lauren Hess each tallied five in the 24-10 win over the Seawolves.
