MONICA YEAKEL RESIGNS AS HEAD WOMEN'S LACROSSE COACH

7/5/2005

Baltimore, MD--Monica Yeakel has resigned as Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach at UMBC, citing personal and family reasons.

A national search for her successor will begin immediately.

Coach Yeakel had just completed her ninth season at UMBC, and posted a career record of 78 wins and 73 defeats. The Retrievers made a pair of trips in the NCAA Tournament during her tenure, earning the program’s first-ever appearances in both 2002 and 2003. Under her guidance, UMBC won league titles in the Northeast Conference in five of six seasons (1998-2003) and compiled a record of 34-2 during that time. They also won a school record 12 games in both the 1999 and 2002 seasons. The Retrievers did earn berths in the America East Conference four-team playoff in each of the last two seasons, but did not advance past the semi-final round.

“Monica Yeakel had an excellent run as head women’s lacrosse coach at UMBC,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown. “She brought us numerous conference championships and a pair of NCAA appearances. She had a significant impact in a very positive way on our women’s lacrosse program. We will miss her as she moves on to a new phase of her life.”

The native of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania was an All American defender at Loyola College in her senior season of 1994 and took the reigns of the Retrievers in the fall of 1996. She currently resides in Timonium, Maryland, with her husband Chris, and son, Luke.
