FIORANI NOTCHES FIVE GOALS, ADDS TWO ASSISTS IN UMBC’S 16-7 WIN OVER BINGHAMTON

Baltimore, Md. – Junior midfielder Kelly Fiorani scored a game-high five goals, and added two helpers, as UMBC (4-9, 2-3 America East) defeated Binghamton (3-11, 0-5 America East) by a score of 16-7 in women’s lacrosse action this afternoon at the UMBC Stadium.

 

The Retrievers took control early, scoring three within the first 3:10 on goals by Fiorani, senior Anna Jacobs, and sophomore Kelly Fahey. Binghamton’s Laura Gabbamonte would put the Bearcats on the board at 4:08, but UMBC pulled ahead to 5-1 on goals from Fiorani and junior Kate Worthington. Binghamton cut the lead to two once again after Heather Grose scored at 14:49, and Leanne Musso added another at 18:29. However, the Retrievers went on a 4-1 run to end the period, and entered the break with a 9-4 advantage.

 

In the second half, the teams traded goals in the first 21 minutes, but the Retrievers began to pull away with 8:54 remaining, when Fiorani found the back of the net for the fourth time. Senior Stephanie Crouch, Jacobs, and Worthington each scored one in the next six minutes, before Fiorani notched her fifth goal with 1:32 remaining to give UMBC the 16-7 victory.

 

For the game, Fiorani led all scorers with five goals, while Fahey had a game-high three assists. The Bearcats were paced by Gabbamonte and Grose, who each had two goals, while Michelle Gross recorded two helpers.

 

Retriever goalie Kristina Raab made eight saves and allowed seven goals in 58:28, while sophomore Rebecca Stern came in for the final 1:32. For Binghamton, netminder Christa Quon made 12 saves and allowed 16 goals in 60 minutes of action.

 

UMBC returns to the field for their final regular season match on Friday, April 29, when they host Stony Brook for an America East conference game, beginning at 7 p.m.
