Durham, NH—New Hampshire’s Katie Leland scored 9 goals and added 2 assists as the host Wildcats (5-5, 1-0 America East) defeated UMBC (2-7, 0-2 AE), 21-13.
The Retrievers stayed with the defending league champions until very late in the game. Senior midfielder Anna Jacobs scored back-to-back goals to bring the Retrievers to within 15-12 at the 16:09 mark. But UNH scored three goals in 27 seconds to start a 5-0 run and end UMBC’s chances of an upset.
UMBC led, 3-2, after a Kelly Fiorani goal at the 11:05 mark of the first half. But with the game tied at 5-all, UNH scored a pair of goals before Ali Levendusky’s score got the visitors within 7-6. But the Wildcats closed the first half scoring with a goal and opened the second half with 2 more to open up a 10-6 lead just 2:01 into the half.
Junior attacker Jocena Venditti posted a career high 5 goals and 7 points to lead UMBC. Jacobs added 2 goals and 2 assists, while Levendusky (2g, 1a) and Fiorani (1g, 2a) also had 3 points for UMBC
