WILLIAM & MARY TOPS UMBC WOMEN'S LACROSSE, 19-9

The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell to 0-4 on the season as they dropped a 19-9 decision to William & Mary (3-3) this afternoon at Williamsburg, VA. The Retrievers were led in scoring by senior Anna Jacobs (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) for the third game in a row, as she tallied three goals today.
Retriever junior Jocena Venditti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) opened scoring 1:34 into the game, but William & Mary maintained possession for much of the remainder of the first half, as the Tribe went into the break with an 8-2 advantage.
In the second half, UMBC came out firing, as the Retrievers went on a 5-1 run in the first 9:27, keyed by Jacobs' three goals. Freshmen Bridget Gambino (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) and Ali Levendusky (Baldwin, Md./John Carroll) also tallied one each to bring UMBC within two at 9-7. However, William and Mary would score the game's next eight goals to extend their lead. Junior Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) notched two for UMBC in the last seven minutes, but the Tribe would match both for the 19-9 final.
For the game, the Tribe outshot UMBC, 43-29, and picked up more ground balls, 34-24. Netminder Amanda Roth picked up the win for William & Mary as she made eight saves while allowing nine goals in 55:08. Debby Petracca came in for the final 4:52 to make two stops for the Tribe. Sophomore Kristina Raab (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) played all 60 minutes for UMBC, making 12 saves while allowing 19 goals.
UMBC returns to action on Wednesday, March 23, when they host Richmond at 3 p.m.
