RETRIEVERS DROP SEASON WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPENER TO LOYOLA, 20-8

Baltimore, Md. - UMBC (0-1) came within two goals, at 7-5, with three minutes remaining in the first half, but Loyola (1-0) would score 13 of the final 16 goals of the game to win the season opener for both teams, 20-8.
The Greyhounds scored the first five goals of the match, but UMBC would get back to back goals from juniors Kelly Fiorani and Jenny Kasper at the 18th and 21st minutes, respectively. Loyola answered with two goals of their own from Kate McHarg and Katie Guarino before freshman Bridget Gambino scored two in a row, less than two minutes apart. Sophomore Kelly Fahey rounded out the Retriever scoring in the first period on a free position shot with 4:06 remaining before the break, but Loyola would score two more in the final three minutes to go up 9-5 at the half.
The Greyhounds continued their run in the second half scoring eight straight goals for a 19-5 lead. Both teams would score three goals in the remaining time for the 20-8 final, two of the Retriever goals coming from Fiorani.
Sydney Greene led Loyola in goal scoring with five goals, four in Loyola's second half run. McHarg added four. For UMBC, Fiorani led with three goals and Gambino recorded two.
The Greyhounds were credited with 10 saves, six to starting keeper Kim Lawton and four to Cindy Nicolaus. Retriever goalie Kristina Raab was credited with eight saves.
The Retrievers return to action on March 12, when they host Old Dominion at 12 p.m.
