2/15/2005
The UMBC Women's Lacrosse team has been chosen to finish third in the America East according to preseason voting by all league coaches. The Retrievers, who went 5-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference last season, earned an America East Championship berth in its first year in the league.
First-team all-conference midfielder Kelly Fiorani, who was sixth in America East scoring with 34 goals and 13 assists for 47 points last season, returns to help lead the Retrievers this year, along with first-team all-conference defender Stephanie Crouch, and second-team all-conference midfielder Kelly Fahey.
Boston University has been chosen as the preseason favorite, as the Terriers received four first-place votes and 46 points overall. Defending America East champion University of New Hampshire, which received three first-place votes and 44 points, was chosen second.
UMBC was third with 35 points, while University at Albany (26), University of Vermont (19), Stony Brook University (18) and Binghamton University (8) rounded out the poll.
The top four teams in the conference will advance to the America East Championship with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship.
