UMBC TOPS BINGHAMTON IN WOMEN'S LACROSSE, 18-6
VESTAL, N.Y.--Visiting UMBC (5-9, 4-1 America East) scored the game's first eight goals and defeated Binghamton (4-9, 1-3 AE) 18-6 on a cold and windy afternoon at the East Gym Complex. Much of the game was played in a driving rainstorm, with temperatures hovering in the low 40's.
The Retrievers netted the game's first goal just 58 seconds into the game when freshman midfielder Kelly Fahey scored on a feed from sophomore attack Kelly Fiorani. Leading 2-0 midway through the half, UMBC scored four goals in a span of 3:21 to blow the game open. The Retrievers also scored back-to-back goals in a span of just 11 seconds in the final minute of the stanza and led 11-2 at the intermission.
Freshman attack Heather Grose (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored Binghamton's first goal with 4:44 remaining in the first half and junior attack Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.) added an unassisted goal 25 seconds before the break. Gabbamonte also assisted on a goal by sophomore center Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.) 14 seconds into the second half.
Fahey, sophomore attack Kate Worthington and sophomore attack Jocena Venditti netted three goals apiece for UMBC, while Fiorani tallied two goals and three assists. Freshman goalie Kristina Raab earned the decision in goal, making nine saves and allowing four goals in 45:30 before turning the game over to classmate Jena Goldstein.
