WOMEN'S LACROSSE LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO TOWSON, 11-10

    For the second year in a row, UMBC (0-5) fell to cross-town rival Towson (5-1) by just one goal, as they lost to the Tigers by a score of 11-10 on a chilly night at the Johnny Unitas Stadium.

    UMBC took an early 2-1 lead (16:49) off of a pair of unnassisted goals by Kate Worthington and Jenny Kasper. However, Shannon Witzel then led the Tigers on a 3-1 run as she scored three straight goals, which enabled Towson to take a slim 4-3 lead at intermission.

    During the second half, Witzel led the Tigers to a 6-3 margin as she connected on a free position attempt (26:38) and then scored her fifth goal of the evening off a pass from sophomore Becky Trumbo (24:54). After being held scoreless since 4:53 remained in the first half, UMBC's Kelly Fahey took a pass from Lauren Hess to score for the Retievers (18:58), and pull them to within 6-4.

    Over the next 10:37 of the game, Towson continued to outscore UMBC as it went on a 5-3 run to take an 11-8 lead. During the Tigers' run, Witzel registered her sixth goal of the day (4:20) and Stephanie Howell found the back of the net twice for Towson. Although the Retievers went on a short scoring spurt with three consecutive goals over the final 3:46 of the game, including a free position goal by Kelly Fiorani with five seconds left in regulation. The Tigers held on for the final 11-10 win.


    Goaltender Jessica O'Connell made 11 saves for the Tigers while freshman Jena Goldstein stopped 17 shots while in between the pipes for UMBC.
