Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Take on Hartford on Wednesday Night

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball returns to the UMBC Event Center to take on the Hartford Hawks on Wednesday night. The Retrievers are coming off an 84-44 loss to defending champion Maine on Saturday afternoon. Junior Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) led the way with 11 points, as freshman Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) added 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers enter the contest with the Hawks at 7-7, 0-1 AE having most recently lost to Maine, 84-44. Junior Tyler Moore led the Retriever offense with 11 points on 4-9 shooting. Freshman Kayla Jackson chipped in 10 points in the loss.

-Sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) paces the UMBC attack averaging a team best 12.2 points per game and grabbing 6.2 rebounds per contest. Junior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) is second on the team with 11.0 ppg having played and started in every game this year. Classmate Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) leads the America East in three point shooting at 41.7 percent, with the Retrievers as a team leading the conference shooting 32.5 percent.

Scouting the Hawks:

-Hartford heads to Charm City at 8-7, 1-0 AE on the year after handling Stony Brook, 64-36 in their conference opener on Long Island. The Hawks used a 14-6 second quarter and 21-5 third quarter to pull away from the Seawolves. Ella Awobajo led the way with 16 points.

-Senior guard Lindsey Abed leads the Hawks with 13.9 points per game. Abed is shooting 38 percent from the floor and 39 percent from three. Sierra DaCosta and Awobajo are also scoring in double figures at 12.6 and 11.7 ppg respectively. Awobajo leads the team on the glass, collecting 5.7 rebounds per game.

All-Time Series:

-The Hawks and Retrievers will be meeting for the 35th time in the all-time series with Hartford holding a commanding 26-8 advantage in the series. Hartford has won four of the last five meetings, including a season sweep last year and knocking UMBC out of the America East Tournament in 2017.

-However, five of the Retrievers eight wins in the series have come in Baltimore. The last time UMBC defeated Hartford was in 2017 up in West Hartford, 64-47. Allison McGrath paced a Retriever attack that shot just under 50 percent from the floor, scoring 17 points on five three pointers.

Conference Honors:

-Junior Te'yJah Oliver and freshman Kayla Jackson were named America East Player and Rookie of the week respectively on December 24 for their efforts against Morgan State.

-Oliver and Jackson join Janee'a Summers, Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) and O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) who earned America East Player awards earlier in the season.
