Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball suffered a 60-44 defeat at the hands of Columbia on Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers were led by senior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) who scored a game-high 15 points.

UMBC falls to 1-8 on the year while Columbia improves to 4-5 with the win.

Columbia used a6-0 run in the first to take an early lead before the Retrievers got a big three from Laura Castaldo to end the run and make it 11-7 Lions in the first. However, the Retrievers would be held scoreless over the final 2:30 of the quarter, as Columbia used an 8-2 run late to take a 19-9 lead after one.

The Retrievers continued to struggle from the floor in the second, as Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) had the lone points for UMBC in the early going. The Retrievers would be held scoreless for most of the quarter until Castaldo caught fire from the floor.

The senior New York native drilled a triple to break a four-minute scoreless drought, and hit five straight points to bring the deficit to 11 late, but the Lions would take a 30-20 lead into the locker rooms.

Castaldo led the way with 13 points, scoring eight in the second. UMBC shot just 28.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.

The Retriever defense came out of the break holding the Lions at bay, as they would cut the Columbia lead to just seven, but a mini 5-0 run by the Lions extended their lead to 12. UMBC would go without a field goal over the final 3:22 of the quarter with Columbia taking a 42-31 lead into the fourth.
