Costa To Participate in the FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships This Week

Matosinhos, Portugal – UMBC women's basketball rising sophomore Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy/Liceo Classico Enrico Perito) will represent her home country of Italy in the upcoming FIBA U20 Women's European Championships this week in Matosinhos, Portugal.

Costa and her Italian side are in group B along with Latvia, Lithuania and host Portugal. Group B games begin on Saturday, July 8 with Latvia taking on Lithuania and Italy facing Portugal. Following the group phase, a single elimination tournament will begin on Wednesday, July 12 with the championship taking place on Sunday, July 16. 

Last year, Costa and the Italians ran through the group stage that featured Germany, Serbia and Sweden. They then took down Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 16 before knocking off Latvia in the quarterfinals. The team defeated Serbia in the semifinals setting up a title match-up against world No. 2 Spain. Spain held a 44-26 lead at halftime before the Italians made a furious comeback, ultimately falling 71-69.
