Women’s Basketball Falls to Rider, 67-55
UMBC women’s basketball guards Capree Garner and Emily Russo combined for 31 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, but the Retrievers shot just 27.5 percent from the floor to fall to Rider, 67-55, in Thursday evening’s non-conference matchup at Alumni Gymnasium.

UMBC women’s basketball junior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored her eighth straight double-digit performance, scoring a team-best 18 points, but Bucknell shot 83.3 percent from three-point land in the opening half en route to an 85-41 victory in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Sojka Pavilion.

UMBC women’s basketball’s Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored 11 of her career-best 14 points in the opening half to keep the Retrievers within striking distance, but it was a monster second half triggered by guards Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) that guided UMBC to a 76-66 victory against Columbia on Friday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium.

UMBC women’s basketball’s junior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) drilled a three-pointer with 56 seconds to go in the contest to trim what was a 12-point deficit to one point, 54-53, but a costly turnover in the final 33 seconds helped local-rival Towson hang on for a 59-54 victory in Tuesday night’s non-conference matchup at the RAC Arena.

UMBC women’s basketball’s sophomore guard Emily Russo (Woodbine, Glenelg) registered a career-high 14 points, while junior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) totaled a game-high 23 points, but it was not enough to overcome a big second half for Robert Morris as the Retrievers suffered their first loss of the season, 84-60, in Sunday afternoon’s non-conference matchup at the RAC Arena.

UMBC women’s basketball registered its second straight game with 80-plus points, including 48 points coming in the paint, to pick up its second victory of the weekend. The Retrievers were led by a game-high 21 points from junior guard Capree Garner en route to an 81-58 victory against local-rival Loyola on Sunday evening at the RAC Arena.

Five Double-Digit Scorers Pace Women’s Basketball to 93-68 Victory Against Eastern
The UMBC women’s basketball team used five double-digit scorers to post its highest point total since Nov. 2009 in a 93-68 victory against the Eastern Eagles on Friday’s season-opener at the RAC Arena. Junior guard Capree Garner paced the Retrievers with a game-high 16 points, to go with six assists and three steals in her first contest with the black and gold.

Komen Race for the Cure Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created.

UMBC women’s basketball has been picked to finish sixth in the America East’s annual coaches’ preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Voting was conducted by the conference’s nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

UMBC women’s basketball reported for summer classes in July and on top of completing work in the classroom and on the court, the Retrievers were able to take some time to be active in the local community with trips to My Sister’s Place throughout the month.
