ALBANY, N.Y. – UMBC freshman forward Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) reached double-digit points for the second straight game and scored a season-best 11 points, but the Retrievers turned the ball over 23 times and allowed 19 offensive rebounds against defending league champion Albany en route to a 65-39 loss in America East action on Tuesday evening at SEFCU Arena.
The Retrievers held the Great Danes to their lowest point total in an America East game this season, but UMBC could not overcome its 15 first-half turnovers, which translated into 20 Albany points. The black and gold (2-18, 1-7 AEC) fall for the seventh straight game, while Albany (17-3, 7-0 AEC) remains unbeaten in league play and extends its conference winning streak to 30 regular-season games.
Albany broke open an 11-1 advantage behind seven straight points from senior guard Tammy Phillip, before Hagaman was able to give the Retrievers their first field goal of the evening. Phillip finished the half with a game-high 11 points on five-of-nine shooting from the floor and added seven rebounds.
UMBC turned the ball over 15 times in the opening period and tossed up a season-low 18 field goal attempts. The Retrievers, who hit one of their first nine shots, went on to knock down four of its next nine shots, helping UMBC to end the half on a 7-2 run and trail, 34-15, at the break.
The Retrievers upped their shooting percentage to 41.7 in the second half, including a combined 6-of-11 from the floor for Hagaman and freshman forward Sara Tarbert (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale). Albany continued to crash the glass, pulling down 11 of its 19 offensive boards in the second half and hitting 43.3 percent of its shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
Tarbert finished with a team-best 12 points and both her and Hagaman snagged five rebounds apiece. Freshman guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) added seven points, eight rebounds and a season-best five assists.
Phillip led three double-digit scorers for Albany, with a game-high 17 points, to go with nine rebounds, six steals and four assists. The league's leading scorer Shereesha Richards chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Sarah Royals added 11 points.
UMBC returns home to start the second half of America East play on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it hosts Maine at 1 p.m. inside the RAC Arena.
-Albany leads the all-time series 13-9 and has won six straight meetings.
-Sara Tarbert reached double-digit points for the fourth consecutive game and for the 14th time this season.
-Bridgett O'Donnell is one block shy of moving into UMBC's single-season block list and three swats away from entering into UMBC's career list.
