BALTIMORE – The Retrievers' women's basketball team looks to snap a five-game skid on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they open up a UMBC basketball doubleheader against Hartford at 1 p.m. inside the RAC Arena on Hall of Fame Saturday. The men's team follows with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against the Hawks. All the action can be seen live on UMBCRetrievers.tv, courtesy of the America East digital network, and heard live on Q1370 (www.q1370.com), with Gary Stein and Troy Green on the call.
The UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame will induct seven former student-athletes and one current beloved staff member into the 2014 class. The inductees will be; Justin Bronson, '09 (men's swimming and diving), Cindy Kubiet (Director of Sports Medicine, 1978-present), Kelly Fiorani, '06 (women's lacrosse), Jay Greene, '09 (men's basketball, Ray Ignacio, '87 (men's lacrosse), Alessandra Pedergnana, '06 (women's tennis), Kristie Pickeral, '06 (softball) and Brian Rowland, '03 (men's soccer). SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (2-16, 1-5 AEC): UMBC dropped a pair of contests over a tough conference weekend, falling by a combined eight points in the two road games. The Retrievers opened the weekend with a 63-59 loss at Vermont and followed with a 66-62 defeat at Stony Brook. UMBC shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the floor versus the Seawolves and all but eliminated an 18-point second half deficit by coming within three points, 65-62, with 4.8 seconds to go. Freshman forward Sara Tarbert knocked down 10-of-15 attempts to become the first UMBC player to make 10 field goals in a game since Michelle Kurowski did so on Jan. 28, 2012. Tarbert finished with a season-best 26 points in the contest.
Tarbert leads the Retrievers in scoring (12.9) and ranks fourth in the America East, while also ranking sixth in the conference in rebounding (6.9). Sophomore guard Liz McNaughton is coming off a career-best 12 point performance versus Stony Brook. McNaughton is shooting 46.2 percent from the floor during league play and is averaging 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds during the span.
Rookie guard Taylor McCarley garnered her second consecutive America East Rookie of the Week honors after leading all AEC freshmen in scoring (13.0), while adding 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals. McCarley tabbed a career-high 18 points to go along with a season-best eight rebounds versus Vermont.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (6-13, 3-3 AEC): Hartford has won two in a row in conference play, including Thursday night's 66-42 victory versus Binghamton. Freshman Alyssa Reaves and Deanna Mayza each contributed 12 points apiece in the win, with Reaves chipping in eight rebounds.
The Hawks are led offensively by junior forward Cherelle Moore's 9.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Since league play began, Moore has upped her scoring average to 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds, both ranking in the top-10 in the league. Mayza is chipping in 11.5 points per game, while junior guard Amber Bepko is adding 11.3 points and 4.0 rebounds. Reaves is shooting a team-best 50 percent from the floor during conference action, for 8.5 points per game.
Hartford, who returned three starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's squad that finished third in the conference, was picked to finish second in the league in annual preseason poll. The Hawks have finished third or higher for nine straight seasons and are coming off their seventh 20-win season since 2002.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Hartford swept the Retrievers last season and has won three in a row against the UMBC to hold a 18-5 advantage in the all-time series. Three of the Retrievers' five wins have come on their home court, with their last victory coming on Jan. 16, 2012 at the RAC Arena.
ON THE HORIZON FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC jumps back on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 28 when it travels to Albany for a 7 p.m. matchup, which will close out the first half of the Retrievers' conference slate.
