CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC women's basketball's freshman forward Sara Tarbert (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) had a stellar opening week in her collegiate career en route to being named the America East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Tarbert shot 50 percent from the field and 89 percent from the free throw line to average 20.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 1-2 week for the Retrievers.
The rookie opened up her career with a double-double, the first Retriever freshman to do so in this decade, scoring 21 points and adding 10 rebounds against Eastern (Pa.) on Monday. She followed up that performance by becoming the first America East freshman in this decade to tally back-to-back 20-point efforts to start her career, connecting on 8-of-14 attempts for a game-high 23 points versus Coppin State. Tarbert capped off the week by falling one rebound shy of her second double-double, leading the Retrievers with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals against UMES.
Tarbert and the Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 when they hosts American in a Retrievers' basketball doubleheader at the RAC Arena. The women open up the evening with a 5 p.m. tip-off, followed by the UMBC men taking on Loyola at 7:30 p.m.
