Women's Basketball Announces 2010-11 Non-Conference Slate

2010-11 WBB Preseason Prospectus

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women's basketball coach Phil Stern today announced his squad's 2010-11 non-conference schedule, highlighted by five games against teams that advanced to the 2010 postseason, as well as six in-state rivals. The Retrievers tip off the 13-game slate on Friday, Nov. 12 at WNIT participant Delaware, one of nine rematches of last season's contests.

"This year's schedule once again challenges our young ladies early on," Stern said. "Playing two ACC road games will certainly leave us battle-tested as we head into America East play. We're also excited about renewing all of our local rivalries."

The Blue Hens advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals last season and earned a home game in the WNIT. This will be the Retrievers' first visit to the Bob Carpenter Center since 1993.

UMBC then travels to UMES on Nov. 14 – its first trip to Princess Anne, Md., since 1987 – before its home opener against cross-town rival Coppin State on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

2010 WNIT participant Saint Joseph's makes its first-ever trip to the RAC on Saturday, Nov. 20, and the Retrievers travel to nearby George Mason on Nov. 23, before closing out the month of November at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 27-28), where they will face Toledo and Brown. It will be the Retrievers' first-ever meeting with the Rockets, another WNIT participant from a year ago, and only the second-ever matchup with the Bears, whom they have not faced since 1991. UMBC also took part in the Gaels' Thanksgiving tournament in 2008.

UMBC opens December with a pair of home games against Bucknell (Dec. 4) and Towson (Dec. 7), who accounted for two of the Retrievers' road wins last season. The cross-town Tigers are UMBC's oldest rival, as the teams have met 44 times dating to 1969, including 10 of the last 11 years.

The Retrievers then hit the road for three straight, including back-to-back contests against ACC opponents Maryland (Dec. 10) and Virginia (Dec. 18). UMBC played the Cavaliers tough a year ago before falling to the eventual NCAA Tournament participant, 68-57.

UMBC wraps up its non-conference slate against a pair of in-state foes in Navy (Dec. 21, Annapolis,Md.) and Loyola (Dec. 29, RAC Arena). Both opponents represent longtime rivalries that date back to the 1970s. The Retrievers have won three straight and five of the last six against the Mids, including last season's 59-51 victory at the RAC.

The America East Conference portion of UMBC's schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
