Women’s Basketball Inks Two for 2011-12

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women's basketball coach Phil Sternannounced today that two players – Lauren Chase and Ashley Lambert – have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Retrievers in the fall of 2011.

Chase, a 5-5 point guard from Bowie, Md., was rated as the No.57 point guard in the nation by ESPN. Chase averaged 11 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals per game last season at RiverdaleBaptist School, which finished 2009-10 as the top-ranked team in theWashington area by the Washington Post. She has earned All-Met Honorable Mention in each of the last two years and earned Second-Team All-WCAC as a sophomore.

"Lauren is one of the best point guards to come out of Maryland in a long time," Stern said. "She comes from one of the nation's top high school programs and will make an immediate impact both on and off the court for us."

Lambert, 5-11, is a versatile player from Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg, Va., who earned honorable mention as a sophomore and junior and is one of the top-ranked high school seniors in her region. In addition, she helped lead her former school, Paul VI, to the state title last season, when she averaged 11 points and five assists per game.

"Ashley's a strong guard who can play several positions and will transition easily into our system," Stern said.
