KATIE TEDDER SIGNS WITH WOMEN'S BASKETBALL; BECOMES SIXTH MEMBER OF PHIL STERN'S FIRST RECRUITING CLASS

Baltimore, MD -- - Katie Tedder, a 6-0 forward from Newton, Kansas announced that she will attend UMBC next fall and play for the Retrievers in 2003-2004."We are thrilled to get a student-athlete of Katie's quality in the late signing period," said Retrievers' head coach Phil Stern. "Katie fits into every aspect of our program and will have an immediate impact."Tedder played two seasons at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas, and helped lead the team to a 20-12 record last season. She finished her career 14th on the school's all-time scoring list with 700 points. Last season, she averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists and was a Second Team All Jayhawk Conference pick.Tedder is the sixth recruit to sign a national letters of intent to play for the Retrievers next season. Betsy Butterick (Foothill College/Los Altos, CA), Heather Luttrell (Northwestern High School/Kokomo, Indiana), Sharri Rohde (Franklin Central High School/Indianapolis, Indiana), Brittnie Hughes (Northside High School/Roanoke, Virginia), and Courtney Doughman (South Webster High School/South Webster, Ohio) comprise Stern's first recruiting class at UMBC."I am extremely excited about this first class," said Stern. "These six student-athletes are all very talented both athletically and academically. They represent the future of this program and I expect all of them to contribute immediately."Butterick, a 5'9" shooting guard, was a First Team All-Coast Conference selection as a freshman at Foothill College last season. Butterick, who played her high school career at St. Francis, averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.6 steals and helped lead the Owls to a Coast Conference championship in 2001-2002 and a 26-10 record. Luttrell, a 5'11" guard has been an All-Mid Indiana Conference selection and Kokomo Tribune First Team pick all three years at Northwestern High. Last season, she averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. She was a Second Team Indiana All State selection in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.Rohde, a 5'11" forward Rohde, a 5'11" forward averaged 14.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists at Franklin Central High last season. She helped lead the team to the sectional championship and was an All Marion County and All Conference Indiana selection.Hughes, a 5'7" guard broke the Northside High School career scoring record for both the boys' and girls' programs during this current season, and was averaging 15.1 points and 3.6 assists per game as of November 7.Doughman, a 5'8" shooting guard, averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists last season at Rock Hill High School and was a First Team All Ohio Valley Conference and All Ohio District Third Team selection. Doughman is enrolled at South Webster High School this year.- - -UMBC - - -
