WOMEN'S HOOPS DEFEATS ROBERT MORRIS, 57-40, JOHNSON NETS 24
Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC senior guard Shalayna Johnson scored a game-high 24 points as the host Retrievers defeated Robert Morris, 57-40, in a Northeast Conference women’s basketball contest at the Retriever Activities Center on Saturday evening.
UMBC (10-12, 7-6 NEC), who never trailed in the contest, led 34-21 at halftime as they held the Colonials to thirty-two percent shooting in the stanza.. Robert Morris (1-21, 1-12 NEC) held the Retrievers without a field goal for the first 6:11 of the first half and were able to cut the deficit to as close as seven points, 38-31, with 11:46 remaining on field goal by senior guard Candace John. However, the Retrievers went on a 10-0 run over the next 5:21 to push the lead to 17 points at 48-31. Johnson and junior guard Mariana Santos each hit three-pointers during the run.
UMBC built a 17-6 lead at the 14:47 mark of the first half and led by as many as 15 points before settling for the 13 point lead.
The Retrievers, who shot thirty-six percent from the floor (22-62), received 10 points from senior forward Millette Green and senior guard Jessie Brown added 8 assists and 4 steals.
John led the Colonials (thirty-percent field goal percentage) with 16 points and sophomore forward Meghan Jent added a team-high 8 rebounds.
