WOMEN'S HOOPS SNAPS 12-GAME WINLESS STREAK AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S, WIN 69-55
Emmitsburg, Md. - The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team (6-13 overall, 4-6 NEC) fell to UMBC (8-11 overall, 5-5 NEC) by final score of 69-55. It was the first ever win for the Retrievers in Emmitsburg after losing 12 straight.
The Mount opened the game keeping pace with the Retrievers, who shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half as a Janet Ust trey at the 6:50 mark brought the Mount within one, 25-24. The Retrievers then got hot from the outside, hitting three straight three-point baskets to spark a 13-0 run. Mount senior Andrea Bogart found Foster down low for the easy lay-in to break the run at the 2:05 mark, only to see the Retrievers go on another 6-0 run to end the half, including a Shalayna Johnson (28 points) trey with three seconds left to give the Retrievers a 43-26 advantage at the break.
The Retrievers continued to shoot with a hot hand in the second half, going 8-for-12 from the field in the first seven minutes to extend their lead to 28. The Mount chipped away little-by-little at the Retriever lead, but never could get into striking distance as the Retrievers claimed the 14 point victory.
In addition to Johnson's hot-hand, sophomore guard Christine Catalanotto scored a season-high 17 points (5-7 three-point goals). Sophomore center Lara Seamon added 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
