UMBC DEFEATS FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON, 69-60
Baltimore, MD - - -The host UMBC Retrievers snapped a two-game losing streak and defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 69-60, Saturday afternoon at the Retriever Activities Center in a Northeast Conference women’s basketball contest. UMBC improved to 7-11 (4-5 NEC) and Fairleigh Dickinson dropped to 4-14, (3-6 NEC).
UMBC led just 40-37 with 14:42 remaining, but the Retrievers used a quick, 7-0 spurt to take a 47-37 advantage with 13:06 left. Sophomore guard Anastasia Goncharova capped the run with a three-point basket from the right corner. The Retrievers led by as many as 12 points, 62-50, with 3:26 left on a lay-up by Goncharova, before the Knights made one final push. FDU went on a 10-3 run to close within 65-60 with 1:09 remaining. However, UMBC went 4-for-6 from the foul line and the Knights failed to score again.
The first half featured four ties and seven lead changes before UMBC would claim a 31-25 halftime advantage. The Knights last lead of the contest came until UMBC senior guard Shalayna Johnson connected on a three-point goal with 5:11 remaining in the stanza.
Johnson paced four Retrievers in double-figures in scoring with 17 points. Senior guard Jessie Brown (5 rebounds, 5 assists) added 14 points, while Goncharova (12 points) and sophomore guard Christine Catalanotto (10 points) were also in double-figures. Sophomore center Lara Seamon added 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and a career-high 6 assists.
Sophomore guard Erin Mills led FDU with 16 points while Marchanka added 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Senior forward Nevin Caple added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
UMBC, who is now 7-0 when leading at halftime this season, shot forty-three percent in the contest (23-for-53) and held the Knights to just thirty-seven percent shooting (22-for-59).
