WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTCHES SECOND STRAIGHT NEC WIN; DOWNS ST. FRANCIS (NY), 64-42
Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC senior guard Shalayna Johnson scored a game-high 25 points as the host Retrievers defeated St. Francis (NY), 64-42, in a Northeast Conference contest, Saturday afternoon at the UMBC RAC Arena. UMBC improved to 5-9 (2-3 NEC) and the Terriers fell to 1-12 (0-4 NEC).
The Retrievers held St. Francis (NY) to just 15 points on four field goals in the second half after leading only 30-27 at halftime. The Terriers were within just one point, 30-29, with 19:29 remaining in the contest, but UMBC went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-29 advantage with 15:09 left. St. Francis (NY) got as close as 7 points, 41-34, with 12:29 to go but the Retrievers put the game out of reach with an enormous 23-2 run over the next 8:06. The burst gave the Retrievers their largest lead of the game at 64-36 with 4:35 remaining.
UMBC jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the opening half, but the Terriers would eventually even the score at 24-24 with 3:38 remaining on a three-point goal by Kim Weir.
Johnson converted on 9-for-20 (3-for-11 three-point goals) and junior guard Mariana Santos added a career-high15 points. Senior forward Millette Green recorded her first career “double-double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
UMBC, who shot 48 percent from the floor, held the Terriers (33 percent) to a season-low in points (42) and field goals (14). Weir was the only Terrier in double-figures with 10 points.
