BALTIMORE, MD. - The UMBC women's basketball team returns to the court on Wedneday, when the Retrievers host America East rival Binghamton. UMBC will be hosting it's Play 4 Kay Event to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Tip-off at the RAC Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Binghamton (12-14, 6-7 America East) defeated UMBC (13-12, 7-5) earlier this season, 61-43, in Vestal, N.Y. Andrea Holmes scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bearcats, who held the Retrievers to a season-low shooting percentage of .242 (15-for-62). Senior Topé Obajolu recorded her third double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for UMBC.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is now 13-12 and 7-5 in America East play following Wednesday’s win at Stony Brook, 63-51.
All three of the Retrievers' seniors were in double figures, led by forward Erin Brown who score a game-high 21 points.
Classmates Michelle Kurowski and Topé Obajolu scored 14 to give UMBC its first winning streak since early January. Kurowski has now scored in double figures in a career-high 11 consecutive games.
Kurowski and Brown, who leads the America East in scoring with 15.4 points per game, are two of just 12 Retrievers ever in the 1,000-point/500-rebound club.
UMBC is the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference after winning the 2011 regular-season title with a 13-3 record in league play. The Retrievers posted a 20-12 overall mark, matching the school record for wins in a season, and earned a berth in the WNIT after falling to Hartford in the America East semifinals.
BEARCAT UPDATE: Binghamton sits at sixth in the America East at 12-14 overall and 6-7 in conference play, after dropping a 67-58 decision at Hartford on Saturday. Orla O’Reilly led four Bearcats in double figures with a team-high 18 points. Earlier this season, Binghamton defeated UMBC, 61-43, in Vestal, N.Y. Senior Andrea Holmes paced Binghamton with a game-high 24 points while Viive Rebane netted 14 for the Bearcats. Topé Obajolu recorded her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
