Women's Basketball Hosts Hartford for Monday Matinée
Kristin Coles recorded her first career double-double last Thursday against Stony Brook
BALTIMORE - Looking for their fourth conference win, and third win in a row, the UMBC women's basketball team (9-8, 3-1 America East) host conference rival Hartford Monday afternoon at the RAC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is now 9-8 and 3-1 in America East play following Thursday’s home win over Stony Brook, 73-47. The Retrievers outscored the Seawolves 49-23 in the second half to pull out the win, despite shoot just 25% from three -point range (3-12).
Guard Lauren Chase, who was named America East Rookie of the Week last Monday, came up one assist shy of her second career double-double finishing with nine assists to go with 13 points and six rebounds.
Forward Erin Brown scored a game-high 20 points while guard Michelle Kurowski added 14 points for the Retrievers. Junior Kristin Coles recorded her first double-double of the seasoning, finishing the night with 11 points and 12 boards.
Brown and Kurowski are two of just 12 Retrievers ever in the 1,000-point/500-rebound club. The Retrievers lead the America East with a .731 free throw percentage. UMBC is the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference after winning the 2011 regular-season title with a 13-3 record in league play. The Retrievers posted a 20-12 overall mark, matching the school record for wins in a season, and earned a berth in the WNIT after falling to Hartford in the conference semis.
HAWK UPDATE: Hartford sits at 10-8 and 1-3 in conference play after a road win over Binghamton on Saturday, 63-41. Junior Nikkia Smith led the Hawks with 16 points while classmates Ruthanne Doherty and Daphne Elliot score in double digits as well. Hartford, last year’s conference tournament champion, was picked to finish third in the America East preseason poll, behind of only UMBC and Boston U.

WHO’S UP NEXT: The Retrievers travel to Vestal, N.Y. to take on America East rival Binghamton on Thursday evening with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. The Bearcats are 8-10 on the season and 2-3 in conference play following a 63-41 loss to Hartford. Binghamton was picked to finish fourth in the America East preseason poll. UMBC is 5-13 all-time against the the Bearcats, with the teams splitting last season’s two meetings.
