Women’s Basketball Falls to Hampton, 75-47

HAMPTON, Va.—The UMBC women’s basketball team (5-5) fell to Hampton (7-1) by a score of 75-47 Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center. The Lady Pirates set a school record with 14 three-pointers in the game.
The Retrievers led, 9-8, at the 16:33 mark, but Hampton used an 18-2 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game. The Lady Pirates extended their lead to as many as 18 points in the first half and led, 42-26, at the break.
UMBC scored the first four points of the second stanza to pull to within 12, 42-30, but that was as close as they would get, as Hampton scored the next 12 in a row to go up by 24 points, 30-54. The Lady Pirates led by as many as 37 points, 75-38, but the Retrievers scored the final nine points of the game.
Senior center Topé Obajolu (Randallstown, Md./Archbishop Carroll) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had 10 points and six boards.
Hampton was led by guards Jericka Jenkins and Choicetta McMillian, who combined for 47 points on 12 three-pointers. Jenkins added a game-high 10 assists. The Lady Pirates shot 43.3 percent from the floor while limiting the Retrievers to just 27.9 percent shooting. Hampton also dominated the boards, 48-38.
UMBC now has 10 days off for exams before visiting in-state rival Navy on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
