Women’s Basketball Defeats Loyola, 60-56
Kristin Coles stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, 12 rebounds, six steals and two blocks against Loyola.
BALTIMORE—Senior guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored 19 points and junior guard Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre Dame Academy/American) keyed the Retriever defense in a 60-56 win over cross-town rival Loyola Tuesday evening at the Greyhounds’ Reitz Arena. UMBC improves to 3-2 on the season, while Loyola falls to 1-3.
Coles finished one point shy of her first career double-double, posting nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds and six steals. Senior forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) tallied 12 points and seven boards, including her 500th career rebound.
Loyola was hot at the start, connecting on six of its first 10 shots while opening an eight-point lead, 15-7, at the 12:51 mark. But the Retrievers used a 9-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to pull back within one, 17-16.
The Greyhounds hit five of their next six attempts to regain an eight-point advantage, 28-20, with 6:04 to play in the half, but another 9-2 UMBC spurt made it a one-point game at halftime, 30-29.
The Retrievers took their first lead of the night on a pair of free throws by junior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison) just 28 seconds into the second period, and the game saw four ties and four lead changes over the next eight minutes.
But a Kurowski layup at the 11:09 mark put the Retrievers on top for good, as they scored six straight points and 10 of the next 13 to take a 49-42 lead with 3:46 remaining. The Greyhounds cut it to three twice in the final 16 seconds, but Brown made three of four free throws to seal the win.
UMBC made just four of 23 field goal attempts in the second half, but connected on 22 of 26 foul shots in the period and 25 of 29 in the game to maintain its lead, as Loyola was just 9-for-17 from the line.
Miriam McKenzie led the Greyhounds with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Katie Sheahin had 14 points and nine boards. Loyola outrebounded UMBC, 41-33.
The Retrievers return to action on Sunday when they visit cross-town rival Towson.
