    Game Story December 4, 2002NAVY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HANDS UMBC 52-40 SETBACKBaltimore, MD - - -The Navy Midshipmen held UMBC scoreless for the first 7:58 of the contest and went on to defeat the Retrievers, 52-40, Tuesday evening at the UMBC RAC Arena. Navy, who never trailed in the contest, improved to 4-2 while the Retrievers fell to 2-2.Leading 25-19 at the break, the Midshipmen outscored the Retrievers 6-0 over the first 3:14 of the second half to grab a 31-19 advantage. UMBC answered with a 7-0 run to close within 31-26 with 12:26 remaining, however it was as close as the Retrievers would get the rest of the way as Navy pushed the lead back to 11 points at 39-28 with 7:42 remaining. Senior guard Jessie Brown did give the Retrievers a glimmer of hope with a three-point goal that made it just 46-40 with 1:56 remaining, but Navy converted all 6 of their free-throws and the Retrievers did not score again down the stretch.The Retrievers scored just five points in the first 12:55 of the game and fell behind 17-5 early. Navy took their biggest lead of the game at 25-10 with 4:33 remaining in the opening half on a three-point goal by sophomore forward Abi Campbell. However, UMBC went on a 9-0 run to close out the half trailing just 25-19. Sophomore guard Anastasia Goncharova connected on a pair of three-point goals and senior guard Jessie Brown added a trifecta during the run.Junior guard Maile Shimoda scored a game-high 17 points for Navy, who hot 37.5 percent from the floor for the contest. Junior forward Bryanna Herring added 10 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.Goncharova led UMBC with 12 points and was 4-for-8 from thee-point range. The Retrievers shot 35.7 percent for the contest.- - -UMBC - - -
