WOMEN'S HOOPS CAPTURES SEASON OPENER WIN OVER TOWSON 55-42
Towson, Md. - Sophomore guard Anastacia Goncharova (The Newport School H.S./Moscow, Russia) scored 19 points and dished out three assists to lead the visiting UMBC Retrievers (1-0) to a 55-42 victory over Towson University (0-1) Saturday evening at the Towson Center. The Tigers remained close with the Retrievers until senior Jessie Brown (James M. Bennett H.S./Salisbury, Md.) nailed a three-point basket with 1:37 left in the first half and highlighted an 8-0 UMBC run which closed the half. The Retrievers never relinquished the lead as they grabbed a 29-26 halftime lead and continued to dominate during the second half, including a 15 point advantage over the Tigers at one point. Towson was led by senior guard Mia Chapman (Elizabeth Seton H.S./Mitchellville, Md.) as she started off the season with a game high 22 points and matched her own career high with six three-point baskets. Chapman made five of her three pointers in the first half of the game as she scored in points. Sophomore Kelli Talbot (Red Bank Catholic H.S./Holmdel, N.J.) contributed a career high nine rebounds, while freshman LaShay Rose (King George H.S./Dahlgren, Va.) had a team high five assists in her first college game. Sophomore forward Lara Seamon (Notre Dame H.S./Ritchfield, N.Y.) made five of her eight shots from the field and two from the three point range in a 12-point, nine rebound effort. Brown added ten points and had a game high six assists for UMBC. Defensively, UMBC held Towson to a 20 per cent shooting in the second half as the Tigers made just 6 of 30 shots.
