Brown Snags Second America East Player of the Week Award

Erin Brown averaged 20.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg to earn her second America East Player of the Week award this season.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC junior forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was named America East Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 20, the conference announced Monday.

Brown led the Retrievers to two crucial wins last week, vaulting UMBC into first place in the America East standings. She averaged a league-best 20.0 points per game, in addition to 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 triples per contest, and she shot 44.8 percent from the floor (13-for-29), 46.2 percent from 3-point range (6-for-13) and a league-best 8-for-8 from the foul line. She played all 80 minutes and was named America East Player of the Game in both contests.

In a battle for first place at home against Boston University on Thursday, Brown recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, hitting four free throws in the final 54 seconds to seal the 62-52 win.

Then on Sunday at Hartford, Brown led the Retrievers to a come-from-behind victory with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from long distance, and her final 3-pointer of the game gave UMBC the lead for good with 3:52 remaining.

Brown is averaging 18.3 points per game over the last eight contests, and she ranks fifth in the America East with 14.1 ppg this season. She has also proven to be one of the best free throw shooters in the league, ranking third at an .879 clip, and she has made 24 straight foul shots in the final minute of UMBC’s last six wins.

A two-time America East Rookie of the Week in 2008-09, Brown takes home the conference’s Player of the Week award for the second time this season and in her career, as she also earned the honor on Jan. 31. Junior guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) also garnered two accolades earlier in the season (Nov. 29, Jan. 17), giving UMBC four weekly awards in 2010-11, its most in eight seasons in the America East.

Brown and the Retrievers conclude the regular season on Wednesday, when they host Albany at 7 p.m. A win over the Great Danes would clinch at least a share of the America East regular-season title.
