Women’s Basketball Standout Michelle Kurowski Named UMBC Athlete of the Month for December

    BALTIMORE—Junior guard Michelle Kurowski of the women’s basketball team was named UMBC Athlete of the Month for December 2010 in a poll of fans conducted from Jan. 2-9. Kurowski received 63.6 percent of the vote to outdistance herself from men’s basketball point guard Chris De La Rosa, who received the remaining 39.4 percent.

     

    Kurowski averaged a team-best 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game to lead the Retrievers to a 4-2 record in December. The native of Hicksville, N.Y., recorded four double-digit performances and posted her first double-double of the season against Bucknell on Dec. 4, tallying a season-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. She also scored 22 points at Navy on Dec. 21. For the month, Kurowski made 29 of 33 free throws (87.9 percent), drained seven 3-pointers and added 17 assists and 10 steals while playing 229 of a possible 240 minutes (38.2 mpg).

     

    Kurowski leads the America East with 14.5 points per game and an .866 free throw percentage on the season.
