COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The UMBC women’s basketball team (4-6) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening with a 71-45 loss to No. 23 Maryland (9-1) at Comcast Center.

The Terps scored the first 15 points of the game, making seven of nine attempts in that stretch while forcing turnovers on UMBC’s first four possessions. A pair of free throws by junior center Topé Obajolu (Randallstown, Md./Archbishop Carroll) finally put the Retrievers on the board at the 13:27 mark, and back-to-back baskets by senior guard Michele Brokans (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and junior guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) cut the deficit to 10 points, 19-9, with 10:48 remaining. But Maryland finished the half on a 21-6 run to take a 40-16 lead at halftime.

The Retrievers came out of the locker room hot, knocking down eight of their first nine attempts to trim their deficit to 17 points, 52-35, with 13:07 remaining. Junior forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scored eight points in the first seven minutes of the period, while Obajolu tallied six.

But the Terrapins responded with a 9-0 run over the next 5:30 to regain control of the game, and the Retrievers did not get within 20 points in the remainder of the contest.

Brown led UMBC with 14 points and tied her career high with four 3-pointers. Obajolu was the only other Retriever in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Kurowski finished with eight points and a team-high five rebounds, while Brokans dished out seven assists.

Maryland forward Tianna Hawkins led the Terps with 16 points, while guard Anjale Barrett netted 12 points and six helpers and forward Alyssa Thomas contributed 10 points and six boards.

The Retrievers shot 50 percent (12-for-24) in the second half after making just five of 18 attempts (27.8 percent) in the first period and finished at 40.5 percent for the game. Maryland shot 56.6 percent from the floor, including 63 percent (17-for-27) in the first half. The Terps held a 33-20 advantage on the glass.

The Retrievers now take a week off for final exams before returning to the court on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Virginia.
