PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—The UMBC women’s basketball team (0-2) dropped its second straight game, falling to UMES by a score of 64-52 Sunday afternoon in the Hawks’ season opener at Hytche Center.

The Hawks were led by forward Casey Morton, who finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Kwinnyata Mercer also tallied 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.
Down by one at the 11:36 mark of the first half, UMES rattled off a 20-2 run over the next 7:23 of play to take a commanding 17-point lead, 29-12, with 4:13 remaining in the period. The Hawks drained four 3-pointers during that span.
A layup by UMBC sophomore guard Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre Dame Academy/American) curbed the rally and sparked a 7-0 Retriever run that pulled the visitors to within nine with 1:33 to go, but UMES led, 34-22, at halftime.
The Retrievers appeared to work their way back into the game early in the second stanza, scoring 12 of the first 16 points of the period, including a pair of 3-pointers by Barker, to cut their deficit to four points, 38-34, with 15:35 left.
But that was as close as they would get, as the Hawks held UMBC to just two field goals over the next 11 minutes while reopening a 17-point lead with just under five minutes remaining.
The Retrievers shot just 32.2 percent in the game and were outrebounded, 49-35.
UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, when the team plays its home opener in the RAC Arena at 7 p.m. against cross-town rival
